Vaccine Detail

Brucella ovis outer membrane complex microparticle subunit vaccine
Vaccine Information
  • Vaccine Name: Brucella ovis outer membrane complex microparticle subunit vaccine
  • Target Pathogen: Brucella spp.
  • Target Disease: Brucellosis
  • Vaccine Ontology ID: VO_0009173
  • Type: Subunit vaccine
  • Status: Research
  • Host Species for Licensed Use: Sheep
  • Antigen: outer membrane complex
  • Preparation: Outer membrane complex antigen from Brucella ovis encapsulated in poly-epsilon-caprolactone microparticles prepared by a double emulsion solvent evaporation method (TROMS), with antigen loading about 13 microg HS per mg microparticles. (Muñoz et al, 2006)
  • Description: A safer vaccine alternative to Brucella melitensis Rev. 1 was developed using an outer membrane complex from Brucella ovis encapsulated in poly-epsilon-caprolactone microparticles. Efficacy: Vaccination with 800 microg HS-PEC microparticles induced adequate serological response and conferred protection against Brucella ovis challenge similar to that of the live attenuated Rev. 1 vaccine; lower dose (80 microg) was less effective; revaccination increased serological response but not protection. Immune response: Adequate serological response against Brucella ovis antigens induced by 800 microg HS-PEC; no positive serological reactions in Rose Bengal and Complement Fixation tests in HS-PEC vaccinated animals, unlike Rev. 1 vaccinated animals which were seropositive in these tests. (Muñoz et al, 2006)
Host Response

Sheep Response

  • Vaccination Protocol: Subcutaneous vaccination of rams with 800 microg HS in PEC microparticles; comparison with Brucella melitensis strain Rev. 1 vaccine; serological tests (Rose Bengal and Complement Fixation tests). (Muñoz et al, 2006)
  • Immune Response: Adequate serological response against Brucella ovis antigens induced by 800 microg HS-PEC; no positive serological reactions in Rose Bengal and Complement Fixation tests in HS-PEC vaccinated animals, unlike Rev. 1 vaccinated animals which were seropositive in these tests. (Muñoz et al, 2006)
  • Challenge Protocol: Subcutaneous vaccination of rams with 800 microg HS in PEC microparticles; comparison with Brucella melitensis strain Rev. 1 vaccine; serological tests (Rose Bengal and Complement Fixation tests); challenge with Brucella ovis. (Muñoz et al, 2006)
