Intranasal immunization of mice with either SfbI alone or coupled to cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) triggered efficient SfbI-specific humoral (mainly IgG) and lung mucosal (14% of total IgA) responses. SfbI-vaccinated animals showed 80% and 90% protection against homologous and heterologous challenge, respectively (Guzmán et al. , 1999 ). Peptides incorporated in the Lipid-Core Peptide (LCP) vaccine delivery system derived from the important streptococcal virulence factors M protein and the fibronectin-binding protein SfbI. The present work clearly demonstrates the potential of these synthetic dual antigen multi-epitope mucosal GAS prophylactic vaccines as an approach to deliver vaccine antigens and adjuvants across mucosal membranes resulting in the stimulation of protective immune responses.(Schulze et al. , 2017 )
