Host Response

Chimpanzee Response

  • Vaccine Immune Response Type: VO_0000286
  • Immune Response: Immunization of chimpanzees with HBsAg-expressing plasmid DNA induced specific anti-HBs antibodies. The higher dose of DNA (2 mg) induced significant titers (>100 mIU/ml) of anti-HBs after the initial injection of DNA. These titers never went below the 10 mIU/ml level considered adequate to confer protection (Davis et al., 1996).
  • Efficacy: The outcome of challenge with live HBV of the ayw strain was strongly correlated with the anti-HBs titers. Of the eight chimpanzees with a titer >10 mIU/ml, all were protected from infection except for one, which had the lowest anti-HBs titer at 12 mIU/ml. These findings agree closely with the critical protective level of 10 mIU/ml determined for humans by the Centers for Disease Control (Davis et al., 1996).
